No prior taiko experience is needed! Cal Raijin players come from a range of musical backgrounds. Our tryouts are designed to build skills from the ground up, regardless of your prior taiko knowledge. We firmly believe that taiko is for everyone, and that it is never too late to join the taiko community!

Tryouts are held once a year at the beginning of Fall semester. Four weeks of tryouts are organized into two 2-week phases following our usual practice schedule (Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9pm). The tryout pool will be narrowed down after phase one, and acceptances will be determined after phase two.

If you are unable to tryout in the Fall but would still like to get involved, we highly encourage you to join our DeCal taught by Cal Raijin members every Spring semester!

Practices are held three times a week—Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9pm and Saturdays 8am-12pm. In addition to our regularly scheduled practices, Cal Raijin members participate in on and off-campus performances, with performance requests varying month to month.
