Join our Decal: the art of taiko drumming (2 units)

Curious about the art form of taiko? Want to learn how to play? Want to discuss its cultural background, and its presence in Asian American art today? Join us at our DeCal! In this 2-unit course, students will learn how to play taiko (a style of Japanese ensemble drumming) and study its history and impact in North America.

The class will be taught in two portions: learning how to play the drum (2 hrs/wk) and the discussion (1 hr/wk).

The first portion covers hands-on learning in the playing techniques of taiko. Students will learn basic stance and hitting technique in two styles, naname and beta, as well as the oral tradition, kuchishoga, of song learning and teaching. We will also be teaching students how to confidently solo on the drum, which will be showcased in their final performance at the end of the semester. The performance will include the two songs that are taught over the course of the semester.

The second portion will be our weekly discussion sections. Discussion will cover the historical and cultural significance of taiko in Japan, North America, and beyond. Students will be able to meet and talk with prominent members of the taiko community during guest lectures. We will also consider how place, ethnic identity, and gender, among other topics, have impacted taiko's development as an art form and are impacted by taiko today. This will also include the course homework, weekly reading assignments as well as three short papers.

Attendance is a significant part of the final grade, with up to two unexcused absences will be allowed. Any more than two unexcused absences will result in a failing grade in the course. Excused absences are acceptable.

You need NO prior experience and it is open to ALL! Join us for hands-on experience while having thorough discussions every week about the cultural and historical significance of the art form as it has evolved over time.
